Debt Consolidation Cons
Before choosing debt consolidation as an option
to help clean up your money problems, you should consider some things to avoid debt consolidation cons.
The first thing to consider is what happens to
your credit when you do a debt consolidation. If the loan is based on your home, then it will show as a balance
owing on the home. This is fine as long as the loan is not higher than the value of the home.
Sometimes, doing a debt consolidation on your
credit cards can add negative
comments or remarks on your credit report. This can occur if
you negotiate to pay off your balance at a lower rate or amount. What it means is that the account may have been
paid but that the full amount was not paid. Some lenders may view you as a risk for future
lending.
The lender can close your account if you are not
being responsible. Again your account will be flagged so that future lenders will be made aware of this
issue.
If you are going to follow through with a
debt consolidation loan, then it is a
good idea to use your home as collateral, which will allow you to get the money to pay off your creditors. If
you then ask to have your accounts closed, this will look much better on the credit report.
In addition, you should be careful of debt
consolidation cons. Many companies offer to take care of your debt problems, but are only looking to collect
your personal information for fraudulent purposes.
Any company that you decide to do business with
should be checked out with the Better Business Bureau. This is especially true if dealing with someone on the
internet. Do not respond with personal information, such as your social security number to random emails that
you receive. They are usually best to avoid as this is often a trick in identity theft.
Any debt consolidation proposal should be
received in writing. Make sure that the company you are working with actually does everything they say they
will. Keep on top of things and don’t fall prey to debt consolidation cons or scams.
